Yaupon is the only caffeinated holly plant that grows wild in Virginia and other parts of the south. Cherokees call it “The Beloved Tree”; Native Americans drank Yaupon for its healing properties and for ceremonial purposes. Yaupon is mildly caffeinated and contains the pleasure molecule theobromine, which is found in dark chocolate. The combination of caffeine and theobromine gives the consumer a focused and happy energy. Yaupon is the cousin to Yerba Mate but differs a bit in its flavor profile, as it is not bitter like Yerba Mate. Yaupon does not have tannins (a compound found in Yerba Mate and Camellia Sinensis that make tea bitter). Yaupon cannot be overstepped. It can be resteeped several times and will always provide consumers with a smooth and clean taste.
Green: Our green Yaupon taste a bit grassy, floral and sweet. It can be compared to
Medium Roast: Medium Roast tastes like an oolong or Chinese green tea.
Dark Roast: Taste like a Chinese black tea. This roast is great for coffee drinkers.
Smoke Blend: This blend is roasted over fire and has a slight smokiness to its flavor profile. This blend taste like a mild Lapsang Souchong.
Yaupon blends will with almost anything and we hope you enjoy our Yaupon blends or the Yaupon on its own.
The theobromine in Yaupon coupled with Yaupon’s caffeine content (about 25 mg per serviing) gives a long lasting energy. Thebromine is also good for oral health. Theacrine gives our brains clarity and focus.
Polyphenols and flavonoids possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The antioxidant levels in Yaupon are higher than green tea and blueberries. Yaupon contains chlorogenic acid, which helps slow the release of glucose into the blood stream after a meal. Yaupon also contains rutin which is another anti-inflammatory property found in popular fruits like oranges and grapes.
Yaupon contains a naturally occurring compound called saponins, which are also found in legumes, ginseng and alfalfa. Saponins help prevent the absorption of fats which can benefit weight loss, boost the immune system and regulate cholesterol.
We are proud members of the American Yaupon Association. Our mission is to promote the preservation and success of the Yaupon industry through ethical production and promotion.
